Propecia is currently the only FDA-approved oral drug treatment that has been shown to treat male-pattern hair loss. Originally developed to treat prostate problems, Propecia has been found to reduce hair loss and encourage regrowing of hair. It is only effective in men, and only in two specific types of hair loss -- on the top of the head and in the anterior mid-scalp area (middle front of head). There is no evidence to show whether Propecia is effective in cases of receding hairlines at the temple. Propecia treatment for hair loss is long-term: significant, visible results may only be reached after 12 months of regular use. Men who stop the Propecia treatment will lose the regained hair in the following months. Women and children should not be using Propecia. Pregnant women should not come into contact with the active ingredient in Propecia, either, and therefore they should not handle Propecia tablets that have been crushed or broken. |
